The Battle of the breast

The government is considering calls to ban the big baby milk firms from promoting follow-on formula. But companies like Nestle are mounting fierce lobbying campaigns targeting the Department of Health as well as mums. Should Nestle be allowed to advertise and mums make their own minds up? Or should Nestle be reined in so the government can promote the message that breast is best?

Tested to destruction?

Once again our children are up to their eyeballs in national curriculum tests. They're not happy about it; some of their parents are not happy about it. Now some of the country's leading authors - Phillip Pullman; Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Rosen - are saying it's time for the relentless testing to stop "distorting" teaching. Do you think the tests, and the league tables they support, help to boost standards in education? Or are they stifling thought and creativity?

Serving soldiers 'living in poverty'

Some of the same British troops who see combat in Iraq and Afghanistan are being forced to rely on handouts just to get enough to eat in the UK, according to a top level internal report by senior defence chiefs. The report, described by Sir Richard Dannatt, the Chief of the General Staff, as "a comprehensive and accurate portrayal of the views and concerns of the Army at large". Does it raise serious questions about the Military Covenant, the nation's duty to support those who risk their lives in defence of the realm? Or is up to the military to take care of its own?
